D.L. Hughley and MoNique engage in a fiery feud, sparking controversy

Celebrity fights are typical in the entertainment industry, and D.L. Hughley and Mo’Nique’s recent fights have gained a lot of attention.

The dispute focuses on a previous radio interview, reportedly offensive remarks, and an argument that has spread to social media.

The Controversial Interview

In a podcast interview with host Shannon Sharpe, Mo’Nique spoke out against what she deemed offensive questioning during a segment on the show co-hosted by D.L. Hughley and Jasmine Sanders.

Mo’Nique was upset about a “Would You Rather” question that was asked about her husband, Sidney Hicks. Co-host Jasmine questioned Mo’Nique about whether she would rather her husband have unprotected sex with video vixen Karrine Steffans or protected sex with Precious director Lee Daniels. Mo’Nique viewed the investigation as an attack on her family.

Mo’Nique stated that after the incident, she immediately contacted Hughley to express her concerns. However, she claims the King of Comedy dismissed her complaints. In response, Mo’Nique claimed she took legal action by sending a cease and desist letter to prevent the segment from airing.

But Hughley denies Mo’Nique’s claims and disputes the allegations, saying he honored her request to remove the offending party.

Hughley brands Mo’Nique a liar and accuses her of spreading fake news in hot Instagram posts. He calls her out for trying to eloquently soften her blows, suggesting that Mo’Nique is supposedly trying to use Hughley’s daughter’s trauma to further her cause.

The argument takes its turn when Hughley makes jabs at Mo’Nique’s workout videos and gains weight, adding some humor to the exchange. Mo’Nique responds by making stage jokes about Huley, and the conflict intensifies when real stories about each other’s lives are brought up

What happened to DL Hughley’s daughter? How did she get involved in the feud?

Around June 2022, Mo’Nique referenced an old interview in which DL Hughley allegedly refused to believe that his own daughter, Ryan Nicole Shepard had been sexually abused. She appeared to equate it with her own trauma, in which she, as a black woman, was not believed when she spoke up about it.

The Oscar winner was criticized by both DL Hughley and his daughter for using their family’s past traumas as a weapon, shortly after Mo’Nique brought up the comedian’s daughter in their ongoing argument over a contract dispute.

When Mo’Nique brought up the trauma, Hughley, according to Black Enterprise, on his radio program, neglected to give context, claiming that his daughter had been abused by a 13-year-old boy rather than a grown man.

Hughley criticized the Precious actress for bringing up sexual trauma in an argument that had nothing to do with the feud and expressed regret for not believing his daughter at the time.

Contract Dispute and Family Matters

Hughley disputes that his name was legitimately spelled over Mo’Nique’s on the tickets, rejecting his claim that there was a contractual dispute over the comedy show and that the dispute touched on personal matters, such as Mo”. Hughley criticizes Mo’Nique’s Netflix special “My Name is Mo’Nique,” arguing that she should have focused on making better comedies, as part of their ongoing debate.

There has been talk of Mo’Nique’s lawsuit against Netflix, in which she said she received lowball offers compared to other women in the industry, like Amy Schumer

Public reaction to Hughley’s video was divided; Some people thought Mo’Nique might have offended someone. Others attack Hughley for talking about her weight, but some counter that Mo’Nique’s earlier comments about Huley’s daughter’s trauma warrant Hughley’s angry response.

Roots of the Feud

Social media users point out that Hughley and Mo’Nique’s animosity erupted together during the 2001 Hughley show, suggesting a longstanding issue that has resurfaced

D.L. Hughley and Mo’Nique have highlighted the complexity of celebrity feuds. It’s unclear if the two comedians will be able to put their differences aside as accusations and counter-accusations fly back and forth, but either way, it should be fun to watch and a conversation starter.
